Graduate Work Showcase

Using more technology in the classroom is one aspect of teaching that has improved because of my course work. Here is an example of a vodcast (videocast) that I made to help my students understand personification.

Literacy with Technology

Film Analysis

Studying other cultures is important to my profession because schools teach children from many backgrounds. I need to be empathetic to different cultures. In this essay I analyzed the movie Whale Rider. This is an award-winning movie that empowers young girls to persevere in a predominantly man's world but with respect to her elders. To view the essay click on the picture of the movie poster.

Multicultural Education

The artifacts below represent my passion for learning about multicultural practices. As part of my P-12 School and Postsecondary Leadership concentration, I was able to analyze several aspects of multicultural education.

Policy Analysis

One of my courses also allowed me to view a local multicultural policy and provide feedback. I chose to analyze Purdue University's Multicultural Mosaic. Having attended Purdue, I knew the lack of diversity was present. Please view the implications of the policy and my recommendations at improving the culture at Purdue by clicking the picture to the left.

Theory into Practice

The artifacts below represent items that I created or research that was conducted to be applied in the classroom. One of the great things about the Michigan State University Master of Arts in Education program is that it encourages the creation of work that can be immediately used in the classroom.

Inquiring Learning in Science

This artifact is a lesson I created to teach my students about the respiratory system. I am a firm believer in inquiry learning. The lesson split the students into groups and allowed time for research as well as discussion with peers. The masters program allowed me to grow as an educator by expanding my confidence in current practices. This lesson is a great example of that. To access the lesson click on the picture to the left.

This page demonstrates my learning in relation to my course work in the Michigan State Master of Arts in Education program.  Each artifact includes a link to the work I completed for the course. These examples also show the variety of skills that I have learned about throughout my program.

Modeled Writing

This artifact is an example of a piece of writing I did for a writing instruction methods course. Though it was not required for my concentrations, I wanted to make sure that my teaching methods were on par with current research. One thing I took from this course was to model the writing that I asked my students to write. Each year I ask my students to write several poems. This is an example of a concrete poem that I showed as an example to my students.

Critical Practice Analysis

The Issues and Strategies in Multicultural Education course allowed me to view a documentary called Prom Night in Mississippi by Paul Saltzman. This film showed the efforts of a community to try to hold a mixed-race prom for the first time. This was not only an eye-opening video into recent multicultural issues but a great opportunity to use what I learned in the course and apply it to the efforts of those students. The picture to the right will take you to my analysis of the effort.

Diversity Policy Analysis

This final artifact for multicultural education reflects the opportunity I was given to apply what I had learned to an actual policy in a United Kingdom high school. A partner and I looked at a diversity policy, applied course theories, and made recommendations for further success. The link to the left will take you to our PowerPoint presentation.

Writing in Mathematics

This artifact research project helped me improve my math instruction. Science and Mathematics Education was one of my concentrations during the program. I was able to take what I learned from the research and immediately apply in my classroom in the form of math notebooks and reflections. The link to the left will allow you to view my synthesis of information.
